Balayage vs Highlights: Which Look and Upkeep Suit You?
Balayage and highlights both add lighter sections to hair. Balayage is a placement technique that often creates a softer transition away from the roots; traditional foil highlights can create more defined brightness from closer to the scalp. Choose around the finish you want, your starting colour and the upkeep you can manage. Neither name alone tells you the final shade, price or result.
What is the difference between balayage and foil highlights?
Highlights are sections made lighter than the surrounding hair. Balayage describes how colour or lightener is placed, commonly with a hand-painted approach. That means balayage can create highlights too. Salon menus often use “highlights” to mean a more traditional foil service.
With foils, a colourist can isolate selected strands and control where brightness begins. Balayage is often planned around a softer root area and lightness through the lengths. The two approaches can also be combined; a finished photograph does not always reveal the technique used. Wella Professionals explains these placement differences.
| What you want to compare | Balayage | Traditional foil highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Where brightness starts | Often a softer transition from a deeper root area into lighter sections. | Can bring selected lighter strands closer to the roots. |
| Overall effect | Placement-led lightness, from subtle brunette ribbons to a brighter finish. | Fine, woven brightness or stronger contrast, depending on section size and placement. |
| What to ask about | How much of your base stays visible and where the lighter pieces begin. | How fine or bold the highlights will be and how close they begin to your scalp. |
| Regrowth and upkeep | A soft transition may make new growth less obvious. | Root-level brightness can make the contrast with new growth more visible. |
These are common approaches, not fixed rules. Bring a reference and point to the details you like: the darker root, brightness around the face, fine ribbons or lighter ends.
Start with your colour goal
- “I want to stay brunette, with more dimension.” Discuss subtle lighter pieces and how much of your brown base should remain. Balayage does not have to mean blonde.
- “I want brightness nearer my roots.” Ask about foil placement, the amount of hair to lighten and how regrowth will look.
- “I like the lighter ends but want a softer root.” Show where you want the transition to start. The colourist can explain the placement needed for that result.
- “I want my grey hair hidden.” Say whether you mean fuller coverage or a softer blend. That changes the conversation beyond choosing a highlighting pattern.
Wella’s balayage guide describes the technique across different shades. The useful starting point is your preferred colour pattern, rather than a trend name.
Which is lower maintenance?
A soft root transition can help balayage grow out less noticeably, but “lower maintenance” does not mean no appointments. Separate two questions: when will the placement need refreshing, and when might the tone need attention?
You may still want a toner or gloss refresh while the root blend looks good. The right plan depends on how light and cool you want the hair to stay, your starting shade, hair condition and care routine. Wella’s full-versus-partial balayage guide also distinguishes a colour refresh from toning maintenance.
Before booking, ask what the next visit is likely to involve and what it will cost. Tell us if you swim regularly, use hot tools often or cannot return frequently, so those practical details can be discussed with the result you want.
What if your hair is dark, previously coloured or grey?
At BellaPharma, we review your starting colour, previous dye or henna and hair condition before agreeing an achievable target. Send a current-hair photo as well as your inspiration picture, and explain any recent chemical treatments. A larger change may need a staged plan rather than one visit. See our hair-colour service and consultation information.
For grey hair, distinguish blending from coverage. Selected lighter pieces can soften the contrast with grey, while fuller coverage may call for a separate root or colour approach. Wella explains several approaches to grey on dark hair. Ask what your plan is intended to cover, what will remain visible and how future regrowth will look.
Is one technique gentler on hair?
The technique name alone cannot answer that. Your hair’s condition and the amount of lightening matter. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that colouring and lightening can leave hair dry or brittle. Ask what change your hair can reasonably support and whether the target should be adjusted.
Tell the salon about any previous reaction to hair colour or black henna. Confirm the testing required for the exact products before arranging your appointment, and follow the product instructions. The NHS hair-dye guidance explains why reaction history matters. A photo cannot establish product suitability or replace testing.

Questions to bring to your consultation
- Which part of my reference look is achievable from my current colour?
- Where will the lighter pieces start, and how much of my natural base will remain?
- Is the plan meant to blend grey or provide fuller coverage?
- What does the full quote include, and are any stages charged separately?
- What maintenance should I plan for, and what would the next visit involve?
If you also plan to add extensions, discuss the order of appointments before choosing the extension shade. Our hair-extension colour-matching guide explains why your finished colour needs to be considered.
Common questions
Are balayage and highlights the same thing?
Highlights describe lighter sections; balayage is one way of placing them. When a salon lists both services, ask which placement and finish each appointment is designed to create.
Does balayage always cost more?
No universal rule applies. Compare the amount of work, hair length, starting colour and inclusions. BellaPharma’s current starting prices are shown above; your agreed service determines the final quote.
Can I get a brunette balayage without going fully blonde?
Yes, brunette balayage can keep a brown base with selected lighter ribbons. The achievable tone and contrast depend on your hair and colour history. Read more about balayage and brunette balayage at BellaPharma.
Should I choose the technique before booking?
You can start with the result you want. Send clear current-hair photos, an inspiration picture and your previous colour history. We can then discuss the right appointment and any assessment needed.
