Hair Extension Colour Matching: Roots, Lengths and Highlights
BellaPharma Beauty Center · 6 October 2026
Choosing a colour for hair extensions starts with looking at your own hair from top to bottom. Your roots, lengths and ends may be different shades, especially if you have highlights, balayage or grown-out colour.
For many extension sets, the mid-lengths and ends are the starting point for a match. Rooted and multi-tonal hair needs a wider check. Here’s what to look for, which photos help and what to ask before agreeing your colour.
Start with the lengths, then check the whole blend
Ask to see an extension sample beneath your hair, where the two lengths will meet. A shade that looks right beside your roots may look too dark against lighter ends. Luxy Hair’s sample-matching guidance recommends comparing the mid-lengths and ends for most of its extension sets.
For example, if your roots are deep brown and your lengths are caramel, choosing a solid dark shade from the roots alone could give a different result from the soft blend you had in mind.
Look at the sample against your lengths and ends, then check the overall effect. With a rooted or balayage option, the darker section and its transition into lighter hair also matter. A single close-up of one strand cannot show the whole picture.
Look at warmth as well as lightness
Two shades can be equally light or dark and still look different together. One may have golden or copper reflections; the other may look ashier or cooler. This guide to hair undertones explains that distinction.
You do not need to identify a salon colour number yourself. Describe what you see and what you like: “My ends look quite golden”, “I prefer a cooler blonde”, or “I want to keep the warmth in my brown hair”.
Check in natural, indirect daylight where possible, and compare the overall blend in more than one everyday lighting condition. Strong direct sun, flash and warm indoor lighting can change how the colour appears.
Highlights and balayage need more than one colour check
If your hair contains several colours, point out both the darker background and the lighter pieces. Matching only the brightest highlight may create a much lighter overall finish than you intended.
For balayage, look at where the lighter colour begins as well as the shade at the ends. For highlights, discuss how much light and dark you want to see throughout the finished hair. Luxy Hair’s balayage guidance and highlighted-shade guidance show why the base colour also matters.
A useful question is: “Will this preserve my current colour pattern, or make it look lighter overall?” Ask which shades and blends are available for your chosen method before settling on a reference picture.
Send photos that show your current colour clearly
Photos help start the conversation. Use this simple checklist:
- Take a recent photo in natural daylight, away from strong direct sun.
- Leave filters and colour effects switched off.
- Show your hair from roots to ends.
- Include the back and any lighter or darker sections.
- Send your inspiration picture separately from your current-hair photos.
Tell us which picture shows your hair now and what you like about the reference. Is it the colour, the length, the fuller ends or all three?
A photo can guide an initial discussion, but it has limits. Seeing a physical sample beside your hair allows a more useful comparison before the final choice. Perfect Locks’ consultation guidance also discusses the value of checking colour in person.
Tell us about any planned colour change
If you are booking highlights, changing your shade or refreshing your colour, mention this before the extension colour is agreed. The shade you want to wear afterwards may differ from the one in today’s photographs.
Ask the stylist how to sequence the appointments and when the final match should be checked. If colour work is suggested, ask what it involves, whether it is suitable for your hair and what it adds to the quote. Our hair colour service is a useful starting point for that conversation.
Avoid buying a near-match on the assumption that you can bleach or colour it yourself later. Advice depends on the particular extension hair; discuss any change with the stylist first. Great Lengths’ colouring guidance explains why its extensions need product-specific professional advice.
Three questions before you agree the match
- Can I see the proposed shade against my own lengths and ends?
- How will it work with my darker roots or highlighted sections?
- Does the plan include any colour work, and is that priced separately?
If you are also deciding between attachment methods, our hair extensions guide explains the options. For current prices and what goes into your quote, visit our hair extensions service page. Prices on our menu exclude 5% VAT; ask for your complete total before booking.
